Will The World End in 2012? Ask the Ancient Prophets.
86Is The End Of The World Coming In 2012?
Having been born in the '60's I, like many of you, have seen numerous dates on which the world was to end, come and go without drama or incident. So what is it that makes December 21, 2012 different?
Many say it is no different than any other predicted end of times, but this date seems to be getting some attention from scientists around the globe. Nobody with credibility is saying the world will end on this day, but there is growing evidence that something may happen.
Were The Mayans Right?
Many people, myself included, give little creedence to the predictions of the Mayan calendar. But there are a few things to consider before completely dismissing this ancient tool.
The Mayans were able to accurately map the paths and orbits of stars, constellations and planets long before astronomers began to understand how the universe works. They were able to calculate the duration of a solar year, down to a fraction of a second. This is far more accurate than any civilization predating modern astronomy. They also were the first to speak of black holes, one of which has since been found at the center of our galaxy.
With their calendar, they predicted earthquakes, their own downfall at the hands of Cortez, and every eclipse from their time to our own. Numerous other predictions are known to have come to pass, but that is a hub in and of itself.
This calendar runs out in 2012. Some say this indicates the end of time, while others believe it is merely the end of a cycle, at which time a new age of consciousness will arise.
A far more comprehensive explanation of the calendar, can be found here.
Additional Evidence
Prophets and prognosticators throughout history have placed the end of the world in 2012. Some are of dubious reputation, such as Edgar Cayce and Mother Shipton, but many were renowned for their accuracy, and sought out by peasants and royalty, alike.
Not the least of these was Nostradamus. Unfortunately, most of his writings were so cryptic, that you often have no idea what he was saying unless you pick an event, and compare it to his predictions. Some are fairly obvious if you know what you are looking for, but often you have to sort through symbolism and ambiguities to find similarities to current events.
Many people swear by his prophecies, but the the fact is, many false prophets have made a handsome living by knowing how to use ambiguity and generic statements that could apply to many situations.
Some Female Prophets
Sybil is from the Greek, meaning female prophet. Throughout Roman times, there were many scattered about the Mediterranean countries. One of the most sought was the Cumaean Sybil. Living in a cave in Cumae, a small village near modern day Naples, Italy, she accurately foretold wars and their outcomes, the deaths of generals and emperors, and many other events. Possibly her most significant and accurate prediction was the birth of Christ, decades before it happened. She also pinpionted armageddon to the year 2012.
Another female prophet that has predicted our generation to be the last, was the Oracle at Delphi. There is much conjecture surrounding the source of her visions. Scientists believe they have located the cave in which she lived, and have shown it to contain high levels of a naturally occurring gas. This gas has been shown to induce euphoria, altered mental states and hallucinations. Whether or not this gas was the source of her visions, a staggering number of her predictions have been borne out over the centuries.
Merlin Chimes In
Not the one of Arthurian legend, but the real Merlin on whom the ficticious wizard was allegedly based. His real name, Welsh in origin, was Myrddin Wyllt.
It has been said that he went mad after the death of his brothers in 573 AD, at which time he fled into the forest of Caledonia. There he found his vision into the future. He was said to have predicted the bizarre manner of his own death, which consisted of falling, being stabbed and drowning. As it turned out, he was eventually driven off a cliff by an angry group of shepherds, where he was impaled on sharp rocks. He supposedly lingered there, until the tide came in, at which time he died with his head beneath the water.
Prior to this horrific death, he often emerged from the forest, to pass on his astounding predictions. Aside from his doomsday 2012 prophecy, the most impressive was his prediction of the first colony to be settled in the new world. Centuries before it was to happen, he foretold, by name, the settlement at Virginia!
Prophecy Goes High-Tech
In the 1990's, a new bit of software came on the scene. It was designed to help predict the fluctuations in the stock market. Called the Web-Bot project, it worked by sending out "spiders" to basically read the entire internet. It read websites, blogs, the whole works. It then weeded out key words and phrases that might indicate changes, both large and small, as well as wich stocks to buy, and when to buy them.
While doing the tedious chore of sorting through the information, its creators noticed a disturbing trend. Web-Bot was throwing up flags prior to some much publicized disasters. They claim it predicted several earthquakes around the world. It also allegedly foresaw the 9/11 terrorist attacks, as well as hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Unfortunately, the predictions I have seen read much like a Nostradamus quattrain. Very cryptic, and difficult to decipher. However, the idea that it is technology based, rather than steeped in mysticism is intriguing.
Moving On To The Science
Scientists are adding their two cents to the issue. Their research has indicated that the Mayans were correct on at least one point. On December 21, 2012, there will be a planetary alignment with the Milky Way's own black hole. The frequency with which this occurs is believed to be between 5000, and 25000 years. Coincidentally, the span of the Mayan calendar falls into the low end of this range, at 5125 solar years.
Nobody is certain of the outcome of this planetary alignment (except, possibly for the Mayans), but many theories have been posed. Everyone seems to agree that it may cause the Earth to experience a polar shift, but the degree of shift, and the consequences are still in question.
These shifts have happened before. I have read that Alaska was once located at the equator. I have encountered theories that this impending shift will be relatively small, and will occur over the course of years, or even centuries. The reported result would most likely be a global climate shift, and possibly a change in the measured duration of a year.
Other theories have included a 180 degree polar shift with global destruction, and the end of all living things. Another theory put forth is the possibility that the alignment will alter the orbits of the planets, and send us all spiralling into the sun. The ultimate global warming theory!
My View
There are a vast number of blogs out there that subscribe to the whole doomsday idea. Personally, I think most of them are alarmists, trying to carve out their own internet following. If you look at the ancient prophets, they do have an impressive record. But the fact is, as with most modern psychics, their hit to miss ratio tends to be only slightly higher than random chance. Also, many of their predictions can be made to fit any number of completely different scenarios. I think the jury is still out on the Web-Bot project, but I suspect it, too, will yield impressive, but easily adaptable results. The best science has been able to come up with seems to be a resounding "We just don't know".
As for me, I maintain a healthy dose of skepticism. At this point, I have no plans to curtail my Christmas shopping for 2012, but the scientists and mystics still have over plenty of time to present a compelling argument. I anxiously await the news.

Please do write more it is fascinating. I don't know about the end of time, but whatever it is, they are not in our control. Worrying about it is not going to solve the problems. Till then we keep doing the right things, maybe it will be useful in the next world or life.
rmr! very interesting hub. Maybe we should live it up for the next four years.
regards Zsuzsy
rmr! Neat new avatar. zs
gee that means I'm going to have to put my diet into warp speed. I don't want to sit on these hips for eternity. 4 years? I'll never get there in time...LOL
Never thought about the "mysticism" of 12-21-2012. but the Mayans didn't use our calendar, so how is it the experts think their calendar ended at this time? And, how could this numerology phenomenon mean anything to them, since they didn't use our calendar system? And remember all the panic about the 01-01-01 date that was going to crash computers, bank systems, missile time-keepers and destroy everything??? !!! Uh, nothing. So, perplexing, but interesting hub!
I love ancient history. The Mayans are a fascinating civilization. Their accomplishments are mind boggling. Thanks for this excellent hub. I gave it a thumbs up.
In my opinion, its difficult to predict about the end of life. This is the only thing nobody on this earth can surely know about. We, human beings, love to enjoy the suspense. Anyways, lot of hard work put for creating this hub deserve great appreciation.
I'm throwing an end of the world party on Dec 11, 2012.
You are invited.
"Numerous other predictions are known to have come to pass, but that is a hub in and of itself"
If you do that hub, let me know!
They say that the 2005 earthquake in Sri Lanka and India, spun the earth off orbit; so that can happen. So could a massive solar flair, so could a giant asteroid, all possible, but no predictions that concur with science to my knowledge.
Party? I'm in.
2012 - hmm - a bunch of us won't make it through the last 1.5 decades to a retirement that the government is doing away with anyway. lol
The Great Pyramid at Gizeh has a prediction timeline in a lower hallway, where the timeline has nothing on it after 2012 and drops off like a cliff at 2020. We heard about it in 1962 as wee folks. What's the 8 years all about? - Frozen earthcycle? Ball of fire? Vaporization?
I bet that's right. 2008 - 2020. Somehow the constitution will be changed for a 3-term final Jackalope.
I am going for the lifetime appointment! I have been studying up on subliminal text messaging!
Well this is quite an intersting hub so here's my 2 cents on predictitions. We especially me is curious about "the end" but I don't believe it is possible to really predict the whens and hows of the end. I love to read about it, and this is a great hub! But scripture says Matt. 24:36 "No man knows the day or the hour" referring to the end.
So it worked, then! Eeeexcellent....
"Evilpants" is probably found in patterns in the Bible Code, particularly in the books of prophecy and such. If the program were still free, I'd run it and find out! I'd look for cross patterns of Evilpants, pyramid, and SNAFU....
You would do better to look for me in Revelations.
Interesting Hub. predictions are fascinating and often wrong or adjusted around ancient calendars. But numerology is itself a very interesting subject and the 12's around make up an interesting number 20 12 2012 is another one of those sexy dates.
BT in fact decodes to 2 (a==1 B=2) and to to 20 . X-files here we come! Did they have Jakalopes in he Mayan civilisation? He asks innocently.
I see you found my alter ego, sixty. It was only a matter of time, I guess. I used to be HIS alter ego, but now I just keep him as a pet! To answer your question, Jackalopes were held in high regard by the Mayans. Who do you think crafted their calendar?
Ok OK I guessed that you horny little devil!
I also find the Mayans fascinating. It is interesting to note that the Western calender is actually about 4 years behind the Mayan calender right now so the Mayan 2012, some say, would be this year !!!! Some have these great theories about Planet X, etc... I am a skeptic, but nevertheless, it is very intriguing to think about. Great hub man!
These prophecies have always been there. The end of Mayan calander doesn't necessarily bring the end of the earth. It could be the end of an era. It could have some meaning, but folks, we are going to be here on December 22, 2012, and quite frankly I find 12/21 2112 more interesting. ;)
Great hub, thumbs up!... (You don't say it, but a lot of Nostradamus Fans do say that Nostradamus said the world would come to an end in 2012... this, however, is entirely wrong! The Nostradamus Prophecies go to the 38th century!)
Nobody knows what time, what day, or what hour well that is the biblical stand point, and remember back in 1984 when they said the world was going to come to an end once the planets lined up?? I remember that however we are still here. Science is quite interesting however there calculations always seem to be a little off. I believe when they give dates it is merely trying to get our attention to see what we believe and to stir up a little trouble here and there.:)
2012 will not be end of the world but that will be a mass shift in human consciousness and indeed it's happening now.
BTW, there were lots of predictions that said that the world end in this year and that year in the past but none of them were true.
The Mayan calendar ends in 2012 but does it specifically states that 2012 is the end of the year?
We all won't know but one thing I'm going to do in December 21st, 2012 is to counting down to Christmas! Santa Claus "STILL" coming to town.
Thanks rmr for the really good info after doing a lot of research on this matter. Thumbs to this hub. I also do not agree that end of world is going to come in 2012 that's why I published a hub today:
Nothing will happen. The science of astronomy has proved this.
rmr, great hub. I also think the Mayan people were very interesting and I plan on taking a trip to Mexico soon to visit some of the ruins. I also want to add the the Hopi also predict doomsday in 2012. I think i will celebrate Christmas on December 18th just in case. You know a few days to enjoy my new stuff! That will also give me time to make that party!
I watched the History channels show on this and found it very interesting - some of the things the Mayans did were amazing. I guess we will soon find out. Happy New Year to you!
This stuff really scares me alot!I really hope nothing happends EVER!It's really scary just to think about it but it's also abit interesting to read about what people think.I do really wish that nothing like this happends though. No Damage No Hurt. It's All Good:)
One year to go, we'll see, but it's supposed to start next year, not end... But it will end, for most of us, be it from a super volcano casting us into another Ice Age or by tons of natural disasters, it'll end, but I got these moves to make while I'm alive see, so I don't dwell on death, I welcome heaven cuz we live in hell know what I mean...
Excellent article!
do u think AFRICA wil b affected if these disasters occure NEXT YR
Very interesting. My newest hub is on this very subject. No one knows what the exact time or day will be. It is all just a guess.
very well put man very nice hub and I look at it all just as you do I look at every thing this way
Don't believe half of what you hear and only believe half of what you see.
We will see that is all I can say. I will believe it when things start adding up and I see the end coming for myself. The end could be tomorrow or tonight we will not know when it comes.
Voted up for sure loved it thanks for this awesome share.
The world won't end on 2012. All the disasters and catastrophes happening now are due to human negligence, or a better word 'karma'. Though I believe that the cycle ends in 2012, in fact, the cycle has already ended in 1979, and from there till 2012, we are in the transition phase.
iam fed up of this end is nigh debates,so a few investigated,a few sites, gospel in stars ,who is ancient of days, believers web who has changed it ,due 2 someone threatning,so the msg were giving out is were useing date of births, zzodiac, astorlogy, and found one 21 december 1979 22,50 evening, double star sign and some none from natural to church, middle of everything arguement of boy and girl, jesus was nuber 1 crossover number2,is a women, correc with gospel in stars, and who is ancient of days,21 may 2011 msg is we found her age 11,month may, someelse found her age 20 and hurt her and used her age 21,nuberology letterology does any one double check and listen to msg,s from god,
It's a shame alot of you don't believe in the mayan profits. This is the last few months we have let's enjoy them.

Really interesting, well done hub. I studied the Mayans a while back and found them fascinating. I am a sceptic with these things as well, but I do enjoy reading about them!
